Celebrating Dad from a Distance

Americans have been celebrating Father’s Day for more than a century. While we’d love to be with our dads on this special day, it can be increasingly challenging to get together in person. With COVID restrictions limiting travel and physical interactions, some families may be spending Father’s Day apart for the first time in years.

Whether you’re a few minutes down the road or thousands of miles away, here are five ways to feel together when you have to be apart.

Video Chat

There’s nothing quite like a face to face chat. Even if you can’t hug each other in person, you can still see each other with a video call. Whether it’s Facetime, a Zoom meeting, Google hangouts, or Marco Polo, there are many ways to see Dad in virtual this Father’s Day.

Make the call extra special by shipping Dad his favorite snack ahead of time, and “sharing” the snack while you chat.

Sign Your Love

If your father is in a hospital, senior living center, or memory care facility that is still limiting visitors due to COVID, get creative with a sign! Contact the staff to schedule a time to see your loved one through a glass door or window, and hold up signs telling Dad how much you care. The staff may even let you “plant” signs outside his room!

Create a Scrapbook

If you can’t be together, share the memories with a scrapbook of your life over the past few months. Create instant photo books with digital services like Pastbook, or put a scrapbook together the old fashioned way. No matter how you make it, Dad is sure to love seeing snippets of your life!

Send a Bear Hug

You can’t hug him in person, but a teddy with your voice can make his heart melt. Head to Build-a-Bear and create a personalized stuffed animal with a voice box featuring a heartfelt message direct from you. It’s a gift he’ll cherish for the ages!

Make a Mix Tape

Everything old is new again! Whether Dad loves tapes, CDs, or has gone totally digital, make the day special by mixing up a playlist with his favorite songs. Send it “snail mail” or drop it to him digitally, and watch him light up at the memory of his favorite tunes!

Don’t let the distance get you down on Father’s Day. Use this year to explore new ways to share your love for dad and experience unique memories together. It’s sure to be a Father’s Day he won’t forget!
