Community Member Spotlight: Heart, Humor, and Adventure with Dee Hillman

If you spend even a few minutes chatting with Dee Hillman, you will quickly notice her quick wit, gentle warmth, and absolute refusal to use the word “hate.” If something falls out of favor, Dee prefers to say she “dislikes it immensely.” It is just one of many small, delightful rules that reflect a life lived with kindness, humor, and a deep devotion to the people around her. Today, Tribute Senior Living in Prosper, Texas is proud to honor Dee in our Community Member Spotlight.

A Philadelphia Childhood and a Great Escape

Dee grew up in Philadelphia, where her childhood revolved around her family’s grocery store. Her father set a lasting example of generosity, often letting neighborhood customers take home food when money was tight, trusting they would pay when they could. Dee loved working alongside him, though her childhood was not without a bit of mischief. At eight years old, her mother took her for a vision check. Upon stepping into the building, young Dee realized with horror that they were actually at the dentist. Terrified, she bolted down six flights of stairs into the street. A concerned police officer stopped to ask why she was upset, only for everyone to discover that her mother had accidentally brought her to the wrong office. The eye doctor and dentist were brothers who shared the exact same last name.

Love, Family, and Holiday Traditions

Dee carried that same lively spirit into adulthood. When she met her husband, Lee, on a blind date, he promptly fell asleep in the back seat of the car on the drive home after a long workday. Dee jokes that she usually has that effect on people, but Lee knew a good thing when he met her. He called her the next day, and that initial date blossomed into a beautiful 63-year marriage.

Together, they built a vibrant life centered on family and traditions. Every year, Dee hosted Thanksgiving for over 20 family members. Her table was legendary, featuring classic holiday turkey alongside matzoh ball soup, meatballs, and shrimp scampi, creating memories over meals everyone loved.

A Servant’s Heart and Global Adventures

When she was not caring for her family or building a popular home-baked gift business, Dee poured her heart into helping others. After a friend’s sister passed away from cancer, Dee volunteered to wrap holiday gifts at the mall to raise funds for research. For two weeks straight, she worked from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, cheerfully taking on the most difficult packages people brought her.

Dee and Lee also loved exploring the world together. Their travels took them across the globe, from studying silk weaving in Thailand to hiking up to Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. Dee remembers shedding tears at the overwhelming beauty of the Vatican, and she still chuckles thinking about riding in a half-door helicopter over Niagara Falls.

Cherishing the Journey

For Dee, being recognized in this month’s spotlight is a meaningful moment. “I appreciate you giving me this honor,” Dee shared, “because it brings back so many great memories of my family and extended family.”

We are deeply grateful to have Dee Hillman as part of our Tribute Senior Living family in Prosper, and we are delighted to celebrate her incredible story.
