Regular physical activity has benefits in all stages of life and is essential for healthy aging. It’s NEVER too late to get up and get active.

Help your loved ones get up and get active by encouraging them to participate in National Senior Health and Fitness Day, which promotes the importance of regular physical activity in older adults. This year the 29th annual health and wellness event encourages seniors to stay active in any way they can.

Physical Activity Recommendations for Seniors

Fitness can be tailored to meet the needs of every individual, regardless of age or ability. Check out this helpful information for older active adults from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans:

  • Adults who do any amount of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity gain some health benefits.

  • At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week results in substantial health benefits. It is suggested to exercise at least three days per week.

  • Multicomponent physical activities such as balance training, aerobics, and strengthening activities can reduce injury from falls and improve physical function.

Although these guidelines are geared toward healthy seniors, there are many ways to live an active and healthy lifestyle with disabilities or health challenges.

Here are some photos of how we keep our residents fit and active!

The Benefits of Multicomponent Physical Activity

Multicomponent refers to physical activity that includes more than one type of activity, such as dancing, yoga, gardening, and tai chi. When multicomponent activities are used in an exercise routine, seniors benefit from improved coordination, fine motor skills, and overall health. Regular physical activity can also:

  • Minimize Health Challenges: Physical activity can minimize symptoms of health struggles and even prevent them altogether. Research shows seniors with health challenges who perform multi-component physical activity at least three times a week for 30 minutes over three to five months increase functional ability.

  • Improve Daily Living Functions: Engaging in regular physical activity makes it easier to perform daily activities such as eating, bathing, dressing, getting in and out of bed, and sitting to standing motions. Multicomponent exercise preserves and boosts key physical functions and mobility, which helps seniors maintain independence.
