From Bronze Star Veteran and Family Man: The Life of Herb Gibson

We’re honored to feature Herb Gibson, a man whose life has been marked by service, dedication, and love for family.

Born in 1928 in Camden, Ohio, Herb was the youngest of seven children raised by Eugene and Addie Gibson. Named after President Herbert Hoover, Herb grew up in a close-knit family on a farm and graduated from Camden High School. Shortly after, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea. Thanks to a crush on his high school typing teacher—and some real skill at the keyboard—he became the company clerk, much like Radar from MASH*. He earned the Bronze Star for his service and left the Army with the rank of Sergeant.

In 1953, Herb married Nadine Wesselman, and the two settled in Eaton, Ohio. They raised two children, Mark and Lisa, and spent many years traveling the country with their trailer in tow, enjoying family adventures. Together, they loved bowling, golfing, and making memories wherever they went.

Professionally, Herb ran a successful Nationwide Insurance agency for over 60 years, retiring only after turning 90. His daughter Lisa worked alongside him for more than 20 of those years. He was also an active member of the American Legion, holding several officer roles including president.

In 2022, Herb and Nadine moved to Prosper to be closer to their son Mark and daughter-in-law Bonnie. Nadine passed away in 2024, and their daughter Lisa in 2022.

Herb’s life reflects a legacy of commitment—to his country, his community, and most of all, his family. We’re so grateful to have him as part of our community.
