Resident Spotlight: Emily Hassig
We are proud to be home to many lovely residents who have lived full and enriched lives. Whether they cared for their families or contributed to their communities through volunteering or work, they have left a remarkable impact on their families, friends, and communities.
This month, we are shining a spotlight on Emily Hassig. She was born in Illinois, but as a young child, she moved to California, where she spent most of her 91 years. She recently moved to Texas with her daughter and her family, including a granddaughter and two great-granddaughters. She has a son and grandson who remain with their families in California.
After graduating from high school, Emily pursued a career as a registered nurse and trained at General Hospital in Los Angeles. Once she graduated, she pursued an opportunity to become a stewardess for the Flying Tiger Line, who were transporting soldiers and needed registered nurses on board. While working for the Flying Tigers, she met and married Donald Hassig, a pilot for the company, in 1958. They settled in Southern California, where they had their two children.
They traveled as a family to many exciting places, including a trip around the world that took them on a month-long safari in Africa. They also visited Greece, Japan, and Thailand.
She has always loved learning, reading, and spending time with her family. She is quick-witted, loves to laugh, and is a treasure to her family.
Emily’s zest for life and love of family mirrors how so many of our fellow residents choose to live their lives. We are grateful for her contributions during the war and for her commitment to healing fellow Americans throughout her career.
